Description
Quercus rubra
Red oak is a medium to large tree. Leaves turn red to brown in fall. It is very hardy once it establishes a good root system and can be a long-lived tree. Northern Minnesota is along the northern edge of its range, but red oak is very adaptable. Trees have a wide crown when given ample growing space but are often take on a narrower form in dense woods.
Acorns are eaten by a variety of wildlife. Red oak has valuable timber, but trees with good growth form are rare in far northern Minnesota.
