Description
Prunus americana
American plum is a small tree/large shrub. Delicate white flowers turn into small edible fruit. It suckers readily and spreads from roots and seed. It is more common in prairie regions but does well in northern Minnesota. It does have sharp spines, and is sometimes confused for European buckthorn, a tough invasive species.
American plum is often planted for landscaping, erosion control, wildlife, and pollinator habitat. It is a good tree for tough sites, including urban soils.
